There’s no way to send a message home without a warp drive. They had a warp-capable probe, separate from the ship, that was able to deliver messages on its own back to Earth (and upload youtube videos once a week), but it was IN the ship that’s now on fire. Even if you could wait the 137 years for a radio message to get back to Earth, it would have to be a really powerful message to be able to be picked up that far away. They definitely don’t have a giant radio telescope hidden in their pockets. The premise of the anthology this comic was for was that warp drives could be easily built with $20 worth of parts. But $20 won’t get you very far if you’re on a planet that doesn’t have those parts.
