Our Long National National Nightmare Is Over 1
This comic was written by Ray Hsu! It was for an anthology called Welcome to Mina’s, in which all the stories took place in the same fictional downtown Vancouver diner, from the 1920s to the near future. Ray came up with the idea to tell the story about the diner before it was the diner. Why did this diner suddenly come on the market when it did for Mina, the main character of the first story, to buy it in the first place? That initial story about Mina already had a strong connection to the anti-Asian racism predominant in Vancouver’s early history. “Our Long National Nightmare Is Over” dials history back juuuust a little further to see how much worse it was in the previous few decades. But as you’ll see from the ending, dialing the time machine back to the present doesn’t mean that racism is over, either. This story is a thinker and might not make sense until you can read the whole thing, but I’m glad we have another spot, here, where you can read it.
